What is with these packs of women in Germany walking with ski poles?

I have been living in Germany for about 3 years now and have noticed these constant “gangs” of about 5-15 middle aged women walking in groups using ski poles. It’s not like they are walking in rough terrain or up hills… just wandering the streets of Hannover. What is the deal?? Are they worried that it might start snowing soon? I’ve seen these poles in stores too… they can cost a couple hundred Euro! Can some one enlighten me as to what’s the deal with these poles???
