Teacher’s Pet asked:

Our Ski Club needs group ski insurance 1+ million. Insurance can be purchased for each trip and we will spread the cost on to each traveler.Depending on the number of travelers the amount is extremely low. What can be done if these companies do not cover travelers over age 65?

OK, you’re looking for a travel accident policy, but you’re not going to find it “cheap” with $1,000,000 of coverage per person. With that kind of limit, maybe you’re really looking for general liability coverage? What exactly do you want the insurance to DO?

You need to talk to a local agent. If your club already has liability coverage, talk to that agent. I’ve written travel accident group policies – it’s rated based on how far you go, how many days you go, how many people go, during a full year. With a $10,000 per person limit, you can get about 300 travel days total, for about $1500. That would cover 100 people for a three day trip, once a year. It pays medical bills only, and only during the traveling – NOT during the “sporting event” for participants who are skiing.

Maybe part of your problem, is you’re trying to do something moderately hazardous, for a group of people who most likely aren’t healthy enough to be doing it, and you want to shove ALL the risk onto the insurance company. The problem is, the odds will ALWAYS favor the house. Can you buy the type of coverage you are looking for? Yes, if money is no object. But you might not be able to afford really high limits, on a primary basis, for each person.

Medicare, though, will cover hospitalization, if they break a leg, whereever they are in the USA. mbrcatz
