My family recently moved to NE Gerogia and my kids are sad that there isn’t snow here and it doesn’t feel like Christmas. Since we are close to the mountains I figure there has to be snow at the peaks but I want to make sure before we head out. All the snow finders that I have found on-line are for ski resorts and I that’s not what I want because that might be man made and I prefer to find a park or something.

I have heard there are ski resorts near glaciers where you can ski all year even in summer. Is there snow on the glacier all year? Does snow fall on the glacier even when it isn’t snowing anyplace else?

I’ve always thought of glaciers as big chunks of ice which doesn’t seem pleasant to ski on. Do they always have snow on them? Does snow fall on them even when it isn’t snowing in other places?

How come most ski resorts/hills close around 330pm or 4pm everyday?

Is that a reason for the groomers to work during the night?
Why don’t hills stay open till 5pm or more at times? with exception of some places have night skiing?

Why do some ski resort groom their trails even if they get a heavy snowfall?

I’ve noticed that some ski resorts that I’ve visited in Eastern Canada and the USA always machine groom their trails, even if they have just received a heavy snowfall. I would much rather ski in powder than on machine groomed trails, so why do some ski resorts ruin the freshly fallen powder? In the West, they just let the powder remain on the slope, and only groom a few trials.
