I need help in my homework. There are two skis with the same width but different lengths. Why is it that the longer ski is better for standing on soft snow compared to the shorter one? Please explain it to me in the best way you can. ( In a scientific way.)

  1. Hugh M says:

The longer ski will be better because the weight of the person will be distributed along the whole length of the ski, so because their is less pressure exerted over a larger area, there is less chance the ski will sink into the snow. A small ski length with a small surface area will exert more pressure downwards so will be more likely to sink. Hugh M

The longer ski will give a smaller PSI than the short one. This should be very obvious when you think about it. Jim W

More surface area = better flotation on soft snow Mike C

It’s because there’s more surface area. More contact with the snow, the better it will float. That’s why when you see big powder skis, they’re really long and really wide. It has more surface area to keep it above the snow. Also it helps with weight distribution and whatnot. Hope this somewhat helped =) Cody
